Grim Chapter 5 Harold Simmons

Grim is a serial story that is updated every week on Mondays sometime before midnight. The story follows a grim-reaper who has lived in this role for longer than any other in history. His name in life was Thomas Bjorn. The angel Remiel and demon Ornias enter into a wager over which side the reaper will choose. The unsuspecting reaper becomes a pawn in a game. Caught between Heaven and Hell the reaper does his best to do what he thinks is right. Which side will he choose? Will he find out about the wager? Will the demon Ornias find a way to cheat the process, and force Thomas to choose to become evil?

Guns on Your Tumblr Cuz Jay-Z Said So

This week I want to explore the wonders of tumblr. I've been told several times that I should check it out. Now I want to put my PEZ Gun on tumblr cuz Jay-Z said so. What? Don't look at me like that!

Before I get started I want to reiterate that a $20 Amazon gift card will be given away to a random person who has signed up for my monthly newsletter.

Sign up here: http://brianbasham.blogspot.com/p/blog-page_29.html
More information here: http://brianbasham.blogspot.com/p/blog-page_29.html

Signing Up!

The simplicity of setting up a new account is easy. After you sign up, you just have to confirm your email address. You can set up a profile picture and cover photo. So far the setup and look seems to scream Facebook or Google+. During my setup tons of popup messages keep assaulting me telling me that I NEED to do something. OK pushy setup popup I will click on you. Once you have everything set the way you want, it's time to post! That was easy wasn't it?

First Post

I have my account set up, my profile photo, and my cover photo. So how do I get my PEZ gun on my tumblr? Jay-Z demands it! There are several buttons at the top for the different options for the type of posts you can make. In this case I click on picture, upload the file, and declare Bingo! This is too easy. There are many options where we can go to next. Music, video, blocks of text, etc.. I think I'll post a song. Maybe the first song on my music list in my previous blog post. Oh nice! Tumblr links up to Spotify.

The App

Oh how I love mobile apps for stuff like this. Facebook, twitter, wattpad, etc.. If the app is as easy to use as the site then I can understand why tumblr is so popular. Downloading it now...

Check it out - http://ninjadueces.tumblr.com/

Ninja News - June 27 Edition

Ninja News is going to be a new weakly feature on my blog where I share some of the strange or interesting or interestingly strange news that I have come across over the past week. If you want to share a news article to share in this feature then please don't hesitate to message me on facebook, twitter, or in the comments.

People trying to Ninja

http://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-show/what-occurred-here-unacceptable - This is what happens when politicians try to be ninjas. This article needs a "you're doing it wrong" picture to meme.

Look at this crazy stuff

http://blog.syracuse.com/sports/2012/01/utah_high_school_cougars_offensive_team_name.html - Imagine a high school team with the mascot name being "The Cougars", but with a picture of an older attractive woman on the helmet.
http://www.iflscience.com/technology/automatic-sperm-extractor-introduced-chinese-hospital - Not sure what to say here.

Writerly stuff

http://www.dailydot.com/opinion/real-story-war-young-adult-novels/ - The war over YA seems a bit silly to me, but this is an interesting take on it.

Transformers: Age of Extinction

Rated PG-13 / 2 hr 45 min / Action - Adventure - SciFi

What is it about?

A down on his luck inventor played by Mark Wahlberg buys a broken down truck to strip it and sell the parts. He begins to fix it to see if he can, and finds out that it's a transformer. Optimus Prime to be exact. The last battle that destroyed Chicago left a lot of fatalities and damage, so the government began hunting down all Transformers. The Autobots went into hiding. Government agents come to collect Optimus Prime who then comes out of hiding to protect the humans that helped repair him. There is another transformer hiding that is working with the humans to hunt and kill the other transformers.

You will like it if...

If you like Michael Bay movies or the previous three of his Transformer movies. The movie starts out much better than expected. The backstory is interesting and the actors are able to mute the terrible dialogue. As the movie progresses Bay tries to mash another three movies into this one. There are plot holes large enough to fit solar systems by the time the end comes. The dialogue throughout is terrible. It's as if they found a George Lucas clone who was raised to have English as their second language just to write the dialogue for this movie. It's especially horrid whenever one of the Transformers that isn't Optimus Prime tries to chime in. It's like they are trying to be charming, but end up being annoying. The timing on the bot's dialogue seems off as well. It never feels like a natural conversation. The second half of the movie they don't even try to make any sense. Bay tries to use explosions and action to mask the mangled storyline. Too often he uses the extreme close up with a shaky camera to make it impossible to tell what is going on. When he doesn't do this, he has the actors reacting to CGI animations that are happening behind them. For example, one character says "Oh my God!" like he sees something coming in front of him. Then you see a large explosion behind him. It's as if the character has eyes in the back of his head. Even with all of the issues this movie has, the acting is quite stellar. The sad thing is that this movie is one of the better Michael Bay directed Transformer movies. None of them come close to touching the original animated Transformers movie.

Wrath of the Ninja - Duck Dynasty

I hate reality shows. They make me want to eat razor blades that I already vomited back up just so I can do it again. In this first episode of the Wrath, I am going to talk about one of the worst offenders, Duck Dynasty. Why do people like this show??

This is the kind of show that makes me feel like we should all wear thick bubblewrap clothing to keep from getting injured by the idiots. This kind of show makes me fear for the fate of mankind. If aliens were to invade and saw this show they would annihilate us all because they would be convinced that we are too dumb to be able to complete menial tasks as slaves. I feel like this is the beginning of the idiot revolution. All the idiots are beginning to rise up and take over everything. I see stupid and it's EVERYWHERE.

I feel like reality shows have hit rock bottom. The people who put this crap together are rewarded for their efforts to lower the IQ of the populace. They find some people who are willing to perform like monkeys and act like a bunch of dumbasses for the cameras. Duck Dynasty is just the latest popular example. At certain points throughout they have one of the characters insert their thoughts in some hick gibberish that kind of makes sense but not really. I'll save you the time. The moral of the story is "don't be a dumbass" every time, but the characters on Duck Dynasty learn that lesson 0% of the time.

Reality shows are not real.

Repeat this with me because it is a very important point. Reality shows are not real. Duck Dynasty is no different. They set the scenes up and there is a script. The characters on the show are given acting lessons, and cue cards are held up behind camera so they won't forget their lines. The production crew holds their hands the entire way. Their corporate office is never shown, and it is where most of their work is done. They are duping the general public into thinking that this is their real life. It's not.

Don't get me wrong. Some of the members of the cast really are that stupid. I would say they are as smart as a rock, but that would be an insult to rocks everywhere. If we were picking teams for a debate or intellectual competition, I would pick the rock to be on my team before picking some of the cast members on this show. We point and laugh at their stupidity, but with their popularity they become role models. Do we really want stupid to be the role model for our children to follow? Think about it.

Ninja Solution

*These solutions are only meant for real life ninjas! Do NOT try this at home!*
Karate chop anyone who says they like this show in their throat. Don't think about it, just do it. If they are watching the show then cut their cable wire with your katana. Be careful! Their IQ is probably going to be dangerously low from watching the show, so it should be an easy escape. Their anger level will be high, you need to move quick!

Giveaway and Other Goodies!

Since the Calling All Critiques event has been going, I have been neglecting what I was working on before that. Which was the building and putting together of my email list! So it only makes sense that I would resume my blogging with more promotions YAY! OK OK so some of you are tired of those, but I counter with cute puppy pic! So let's get to the nitty gritty since I know you all don't have all day for me to dance around like a crazy person.

So what's this giveaway you speak of?

I am giving away a $20 Amazon gift card to a random person who has signed up for my monthly newsletter. The winner will be announced in the next Newsletter which should be going out on July 20. The cutoff date for entry will be July 19, 2014 at midnight EST.  This isn't just a 1 time giveaway. I will be giving away something every month. All you have to do to enter is sign up for my monthly newsletter. As long as it is legal for me to send you the prize listed in each month's contest. If it is illegal then you'll just have to enjoy all of the other benefits of signing up for my monthly newsletter.

What are these other benefits?

Oh let me count the benefits!
  1. Exclusive Content - I plan on providing exclusive content that is only available to those of you who sign up for the newsletter. An interactive story where you get to help choose the direction it goes and previews of writing I am currently working on are a couple of examples.
  2. Popular Content - The blog is evolving again, and I plan to begin providing daily content. If you don't plan on visiting this blog every day (I don't expect you to, but thank you if you do!), the newsletter will provide you with a list of the most popular posts over the past month.
  3. Events and Contests! - There will be other events and contests that will be taking place on the blog or on the various social media outlets around the interwebs. These events and contests will take place outside of the newsletter, but you can read about them first in the newsletter.
  4. Other Shenanigans - This is a catchall for some of the other things I have planned for the newsletter. It will be a fun time, and you don't want to miss the party!

What if I don't sign up?

Do you really want to make the puppy sad?? Submit to the power of the puppy! The power of puppy compels you! No? Here's a list of things that will most probably happen (not really) if you don't sign up for the list.I take no responsibility if any of these things really do happen to you.

  1. The Loch Ness Monster will destroy your house then ask you for $3.50.
  2. Deadpool will assassinate your favorite stuffed animal.
  3. Oprah will stalk you to the ends of the earth just to turn your brain to mush with cute puppy pics.
  4. Justin Beiber will TP your house. Probably after The Loch Ness Monster destroys it.
  5. Shenanigangsters will shenanigate with the shenanigans. *will probably happen anyway*

So what does this newsletter look like?

I have just sent out my first newsletter! I accidentally labeled it the July Edition, but I think I'm just going to claim that it's because I'm ahead of my time. I'm so future right now guys. Do you think I can get away with that?? Anyway here's the link to the first one: http://archive.aweber.com/4321newsletter/6Jhqv/h/Brian_Basham_Newsletter_July.htm

The Rover

Rated R / 1 hr 42 min / Crime - Drama

What is it about?

The setting is Australia and some great catastrophe has taken place. Some bandits have escaped from a shootout and get their truck stuck. They steal Guy Pearce's car and keep moving. Guy gives chase after getting the truck out of the spot it's stuck. When the bandits stop they tell Pearce that he can't have his car back and knock him out. Robert Pattinson is the brother of one of the bandits who was left behind because they thought him dead. He finds Pearce and the truck. Guy forces the brother to help him track down the bandit gang.

You will like it if...

You like slow developing gritty dramas. Much of the material in this movie is dry and slow moving. A lot of the movie could have been left on the cutting room floor. The music track selections throughout the movie give an odd feel to the setting, and many times they don't make any sense at all. Pattinson singing Keri Hilson is one example. Guy Pearce gives a strong gritty performance that will be overlooked by many who skip this film. Pattinson also gives a decent performance, but his accent could have used some work. He sounded more like an American hick than someone from Australia. The script doesn't even try to tie up any loose ends or explain too much of what is happening. It's simply about the journey of the two main characters. Guy Pearce's performance makes it worth seeing if you are interested, but this one will be available at Redbox sooner rather than later. You might want to wait for that.

22 Jump Street

Rated R / 1 hr 52 min / Action - Comedy - Crime

What is it about?

Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum are struggling with their new assignment. The powers that be in the police department decide that they are failing because they aren't doing the same thing they did in the first movie. They spare no expense to put together another operation using the two as undercover cops. This time they are in college because they look too old to be in high school. Ice Cube is back as their supervising officer. There is a new drug out that is making it's way through the local college campus called "Whyphy" pronounced the same as WiFi. A girl at the college had died from the drug, so the duo has been assigned to stumble their way through the case.

You will like it if...

You liked the 21 Jump Street movie. This movie is more of the same, but they have refined the formula to make this version funnier than the original. The writers also worked Ice Cube into a bigger role for this sequel. Jonah Hill is clearly the better actor and has mastered looking uncomfortable on screen. Channing Tatum fills the role of the dumb jock well. The funniest scene in the movie wouldn't be possible without Ice Cube. There are several laughs throughout the movie, but don't think about the story too much. If you enjoyed the first one then you must see this sequel.

The Problem With Hearts

by Maggie W
Genre: YA Contemporary Romance

The closest thing to a make-out Nadine Harper’s ever had was with her breathing tube. And that wasn’t much of a turn on. Her lack of sex appeal might be due to her chest scar that runs to her belly button, or it could be her stank-face attitude. Either way, she has none, and she wants that to change. Fortunately, she has a guardian angel to help with that. He may be her grandfather, but Pa knows the game of life better than she does. He did die from the same heart condition that’s killing her, after all.

When James Backer makes her G-rated life a little more noteworthy, Nadine will need all the help she can get. His onyx eyes, disheveled hair and leather jacket lure her in, but it’s his heart she ends up vying for. The problem is he’s not so willing to give it to her.

While deciphering his mixed signals and fearing her own last breath, Nadine's turmoil doesn’t help with her already breaking heart. With its failure looming and using the guidance from Pa, she must decide between the pain of putting it back on the line or dying with a life worth leaving behind.

I am a graduate of Purdue University with a Bachelor’s in English Literature. I am also a relative of a hypo-plastic left heart syndrome survivor, like Nadine. In this YA Contemporary Romance, The Problem with Hearts (complete at 64,000 words), I convey the difficulties of a bed ridden heart-warrior refusing to let a disease define her.

Edge of Tomorrow

Rated PG-13 / 1 hr 53 min / Action - Sci-Fi

What is it about?

Tom Cruise is a press consultant for the military. He helps to sell the war against the invading aliens. He is then told that he must cover the assault on the enemy from the front lines. When he refuses, he is labeled a deserter. He finds himself in handcuffs with the invasion force. He is forced to join them for the attack. The attack is a disaster. Cruise manages to kill one of the alpha aliens before he dies. The alien's blood gives him the power to reset the day, and he is able to come back to the same point in time when he dies. He uses this power to try to fight back.

You will like it if...

You like sci-fi action movies. The thought of the alien's blood giving Tom Cruise's character these fantastic powers is a bit rediculous. If you can get past that without having a stroke then the rest of the movie is quite entertaining. The special effects are well done. The aliens are speedy and lethal looking. Emily Blunt is a great choice for the female lead in the movie. She steals several scenes from Cruise. The ending is a bit predictable, but that doesn't ruin it. If you have any interest in seeing this movie I would recommend that you do.

Entry:
We’re not imposing a word limit for this critique; however, you already know that too long isn’t going to get you an agent or interest in your novel, right?
This week’s deadline: Monday, June 9, 2014, at 8 p.m.
No changes for the rest of this from last week: Your entry will be assigned a number in the order in which it is received. Our cutoff is 30 entries. Entries 1-6 will be posted on our blogs Monday morning, entries 7-12 will be posted on our blogs Tuesday morning, etc.
Your email will be kept confidential. What you submit is what will be posted, so double- and triple-check your spelling and grammar. (We may correct crazy formatting errors as a result of email quirks, but still, make sure it’s clean before you press send.) You may resubmit an entry, but it goes to the end of the queue: if you submit it past the 30-entry cutoff, you’ll have lost your spot.
All 30 accepted entrants will be entered into the prize drawing, and the winner will be chosen by their assigned number through Random.org.
As always, if you don’t want both positive and negative feedback, please don’t enter. This event is for us to help one another grow as authors and maybe to make some friends in the process.
Some fine print: Entries that don’t include the above information will be discarded. At our sole discretion, we may also discard other posts for reasons such as offensive/distasteful material. Erotica may be confined only to certain blogs, and we may put an adult content warning on it.

If You Enter, Please …

Critique other entrants. The sky’s the limit on how many other entries you critique, but we ask that you at least provide feedback to two other participants.
Also, when you receive feedback on your entry, be gracious if you decide to respond. We would highly suggest not responding except for perhaps a “thank you,” but you’re going to do what you’re going to do, aren’t you? Don’t be defensive or explanatory; these critiques are for you to improve your writing. Take what you want and leave the rest behind.

And If You Critique, Please …

Be nice. Be constructive. Be specific. Be polite.
Mean-spirited or spam posts will be deleted. General “I love everything about it and I think you’re the next J.K. Rowling, ZOMG!” obviously-written-about-your-best-friend comments won’t be deleted, but that’s tacky. Don’t be tacky.

Join us for more fun next week!

Finished and on Wattpad: These Are Not The Droids You're Looking For

These Are Not The Droids You Are Looking For

I finished this story last night, and thought you all might enjoy! This story is a bit on the silly side, but for those of you who follow me on twitter you already know that side of me.

Follow the misadventures of Bob and Doug. They are two of the Storm Troopers that have shown up sporadically throughout the original Star Wars trilogy. Their first appearance is in Episode 4, the original Star Wars, where they were assigned to look for R2-D2 and C3PO. At that point they encountered a young Luke Skywalker and Obi Wan Kenobi. That is when we are first introduced to the Jedi mind trick.
