You spend half of your nest egg on deadbolt locks and a couple of heavy duty safes. You spend your entire day off installing all of the equipment over every entrance and window. You must ensure that your money is secure!
It takes you an hour to set each lock, but it is worth it! You then feel safe in going to work. While you are away someone tries to rob you, but your house is secure and they are unable to break in. In the robber's frustration he makes a molitov cocktail and sets your home ablaze. Your neighbors don't call the fire department until it looks like the fire may spread to their house. After all fire protection is expensive! They didn't want to call for an emergency service if they were in no immediate danger. You lose everything. At least you weren't inside and you have insurance.
Your bank is your insurance company. They send you a notice saying that they are denying your claim because your policy clearly states that they don't cover arson that is a direct result of your actions. The notice says that if the arsonist had been able to break into your house then they wouldn't have set fire to your house, and that you had recently installed some heavy duty locks to prevent theft. This is based on your neighbor's testimony. They did not call the police because the robber wasn't trying to steal from them and calling out the police costs money. You have the best neighbors ever by the way.
You are broke with no place to stay.
